Embracing the Big Apple: Overcoming Fear of Moving to New York City
Not too long ago I read a book titled “PUT YOUR ASS [where your heart wants to be]. New York City was, of course, my resounding answer. I have always wanted to live in the Big Apple. ALWAYS. However, the dream of living in New York City often feels like a paradox: a thrilling quest for artistic inspiration coupled with the anxiety of leaving behind familiarity and the safety of knowing what will happen in my daily life. Who wants safety you ask? ALL OF US. Well, I’ll speak for myself. I do. I come from a history of debilitating anxiety, dreadful depression, addictions running rampant, and a safe, calm day keeps me balanced. But balance can be boring and it is certainly not going to get me to the place where my artistic dreams are going to come to fruition. The fear of moving to NYC has been paralyzing. Well, I have hit a wall.
I know in my gut it’s time. I weighed all of it. I have a house, a steady girlfriend, 3 pets, a job, and yet, I have to go. I could easily talk myself out of it by justifying the need to stay in place for any of those reasons.
Close your eyes and try to imagine the vibrant art scene, the electric energy, and the cultural melting pot ceaselessly swirling around the endless bustling streets 24 hours a day. The colors, the lights, the images, the stimulation EVERYWHERE you look. The energy feels like I am inhaling espresso shots and sugar all day long just by having my eyes open. This city is a breeding ground for artistic and creative ideas and the only downfall is my utter lack of ability to capture and absorb it all.
You’re not alone if you are terrified. So without further adieu, here’s a few tips (with a little help from my friends at AI) on how to overcome that fear and turn your dreams into a reality.
Acknowledge the Fear
Fear is a natural response to significant change. Recognizing that it’s okay to feel apprehensive is the first step. Whether it’s concerns about financial stability, the fast-paced lifestyle, or the competitiveness of the art scene, acknowledge your fears instead of letting them consume you. Write them down and reflect on each one. This will help you understand what specifically worries you and make it easier to address.
Research and Prepare
Do your homework. Knowledge is a powerful antidote to fear. Research the neighborhood you feel suits your needs and personality, art galleries, and artistic communities. Understanding the landscape of the art world—it’s specific neighborhoods, galleries, and events—will make tackling the art world less daunting. Join online forums or social media groups for artists in NYC to gain insights and connect with like-minded individuals and potential collaborators.
Create a Plan
Having a plan significantly reduces anxiety. And I do mean significantly. If there is one thing I am an expert on, it is anxiety reduction techniques. Start by breaking down your move into manageable steps. This involves budgeting, finding a place to live, and/or setting up your studio. Visit the city first to explore neighborhoods and art venues and consider getting involved in local art fairs and exhibitions. By creating a detailed plan, you’ll gain confidence in your ability to navigate your new surroundings.
Find Your Community
New York City can feel overwhelming, but it also offers incredible opportunities to build a community. Seek out art collectives, workshops, or open studios in the type of art you create and expand into other areas that you might explore down the road. Engaging with other artists will provide support systems and valuable networking opportunities. Attend gallery openings or art walks—these are not just places to showcase your work but meeting points to connect with others sharing your passion.
Visualize Your Success
This tip can be done now and everyday of your life. I have begun visualizing myself as a successful artist no matter where I am living. I am finally at a point in my life where the idea of becoming successful (not failing0 doesn’t send me running to crawl under my sheets. I’m ready. However, let the city’s energy fuel your creative aspirations. Visualization is a potent tool for overcoming fear. Imagine yourself thriving in New York City, surrounded by your (whatever type of art you create), receiving admiration and feedback. Visualize the people you’ll meet, the galleries that will showcase your work, and the joy of pursuing your passion every day. This positive imagery can inspire you to make the leap.
Embrace Discomfort
This is a tall order, but a vital one. Anytime a good change is going to be made, it will be hard, uncomfortable and often painful until you reach the other side. Moving to a new city is no exception. You will be faced with challenges and fears that foster growth. Embrace the discomfort as part of your journey. Understand that it’s okay to feel out of your element; every step you take is a step toward your goal. Be open to new ideas, constructive criticism, and the evolution of your artistic voice.
FINALLY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: TAKE THE LEAP
Ultimately, the most effective way to overcome the fear of moving to New York City is to take the leap. It may feel daunting, but the potential for growth, inspiration, and artistic fulfillment beckons. Remember, the heartbeat of your passion is closer than you think. New York City is a canvas waiting for your creative artistry; step onto its vibrant streets, and let your creativity flourish.
In summary, while fear is a natural part of change, it does not need to hold you back. By acknowledging your concerns, doing your research, preparing a solid plan, finding community, visualizing success, embracing the learning curve, and ultimately taking that leap, you’ll open the door to endless possibilities in the art world. Your journey in NYC awaits!
